If your child vomits, do not offer him/her anything to eat or drink for 1 hour.

After 1 hour you may offer 1 teaspoon (measuring spoon) of a clear liquid. Clear liquids include:  Pedialyte, Enfalyte, KAO Lectrolyte, and sport drinks or Gatorade (for older children.) If your child keeps this down, you may repeat it again every 15 minutes for 1 hour, then give 1 tablespoon (measuring spoon) every 15 minutes for 1 hour. If this is successful you should offer one ounce of clear liquids every 20 minutes sipped over the 20 minute intervals.  If your child continues to do well and holds down the clear liquids you can gradually increase the amount you are giving.  Do not offer solid foods, milk, or juices until your child is tolerating clear fluids well for several hours. When you introduce solids start with simple, bland foods such as crackers, dry cereal, or plain toast.

If your child vomits the clear liquids, it is best to wait one hour and then start over from the beginning again.

  • The vomiting is persistent.
  • Your child does not urinate for 8 to 10 hours.
  • Your child becomes confused.
  • Any blood appears in the vomitus.
  • You have any questions or concerns.
