All infants should ride rear-facing in the back seat until they have reached at least 1 year of age and at least 20 pounds.

Once your child is at least 1 year of age and weighs at least 20 pounds she can ride forward-facing in an approved safety seat. She should remain in this until at least 4 years of age.

Children 4 years of age or older but under 8 years of age should ride in an approved child booster seat.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that children 12 years and under should ride buckled up in the back seat.

The Pennsylvania State Police performs free monthly car seat installation inspections at Magee-Womens Hospital. An appointment is needed. For more information or to register click here or call 412-802-8299. For other locations contact the PA State Police at 412-294-1116.

The office of the District Attorney of Allegheny County sponsors car seat safety checkpoints. Each has a certified Safety Enforcement & Assistance Team to inspect car seats. Contact the checkpoint to make an appointment.
